For the SCIRA U.S. District 1 Jr. Snipe Championship Regatta on Friday, good wind in the morning gave way to light wind in the afternoon which was when the races were to be held. A windward-leeward course was set up for the five competitors. Joe Panza and crew Matt Erickson went deep left toward the new wind on the first windward leg. The right side was deadly. On the second windward leg, the leaders nicely played the recovered right side to advantage. This reversal paid off and the rest of the fleet never regained much ground. Matt and Colin Johannessen put a fine effort into the chase as did Adam Rousmaniere and crew Danny McDonald behind them. Erin Elser and crew Megan Gallagher were next in pursuit. Two new Junior members of SCIRA were picked up by the SCIRA rep.
The Junior/Seniors started as a separate division behind the Junior/Juniors. Cameron Fraser and crew Martin Fraser sailed a nice steady race to win, with Kathryn Spindler and crew Fred Abels building momentum right behind and advancing as the race went on.
After the first race, the wind continued to die down and never recovered. The juniors spent the next couple of hours swimming and frolicking in the lake off their Snipes. Water cannons saw action and the Race Committee took to the water also, abandoning the Race Committee boat. The in-water activity went on until the young sailors were towed in for the 7:00 PM pizza party.

OPTI REGATTA, 8/26 - 27
The wind did not recover until Saturday afternoon, so there were not any Opti races on Saturday morning. However, on Sunday morning a nice steady breeze developed in the middle of the lake out of the southwest. Three Opti races were held on a triangular course for five competitors, including some of the junior Snipe sailors. Cameron Fraser took the first race with an impressive victory. But Joe Panza won the next two on comebacks from pre-mature starts in both races to take the number one spot. The racing was close with the fleet sailing together most of the time. Young Pierce Wolcott, Catlin Erickson, and Adam Rousmaniere sailed well in the tight fleet races.
BOARD OF GOVERNORS' SCIRA SNIPE REGATTA, 8/26 - 27
On Saturday morning, the races were postponed because of no wind. Early lunch and beer came first with a little bit of relaxation to follow. In the afternoon, the Quassy one triangle and windward course was set and three races were run in crazy light air. The one side good, one side bad prevailed from Friday. Many sailors spoke of "wrongside-itis" as the good side became the bad side and the bad side became the good side on the next windward leg.
The party was great on Saturday night with delicious lobsters and steaks hitting the spot. The DJ and partying were so good that everyone denied they had come for sailing at all. Regatta winner Pedro Lorson later said that the nighttime party rivaled the craziness of the day's wind.
More wind appeared on Sunday out of the west and southwest. But meanwhile a crisis occurred on shore that had never happened before - the beer ran out! The Regatta Committee responded quickly with calls to beer men across the land. Before the fleet returned after the races for lunch, every known brand of beer was pouring in and the traditional surplus was still evident long after everyone had left in the evening.
For the day's races, our Commodore Shane Erickson took command of the Race Committee boat and put on three very challenging Olympic course races. The wind was much steadier on the starting line but was blowing in different directions at various parts of the lake. The favored side on the starting line or leeward mark, and the favored side at the windward mark were often at odds. At times, there was tacking on the reaches at the rhumb line. At one point, it was difficult to get to and around the windward mark because of progressive shifts to the right - it looked like the boats trying to round the mark were retiring toward the club (they were sailing toward the new beer!).
Top five finishers in the A Fleet from top to bottom were Pedro Lorson/Melitta King, Peter Wolcott/ Kerri Wolcott, Dave Lence/Steve Cromby, Mark Schneider/Ashley Schneider, and Joel Zackin/Celeste Suggs. Second and fifth place competitors from the local QYC fleet were given extra big applauses and the cheer "Quassyaire!"
Juniors Adam Rousmaniere/Danny McDonnell and Jenn Erickson/Jason Gallagher respectively took first and second in the B Fleet. All of the juniors racing in the senior Snipe regatta sailed outstandingly. QYC's competitive Opti Sailing Program and Junior Sailing Program really paid off big time this year with improved youth sailing and more fun than ever before at the club. Just wait until next year!!!!!!!
