Snipes at Broadstairs, Kent England 1999

Eighteen Snipe crews entered the Broadstairs Open on the Kent coast on 3-4 July. The meeting was the second leg of the Yves le Bour Challenge, a three stage series with regattas in France, England and Belgium. Seven competitors crossed the Channel for the weekend.

In Saturday's first race, the wind teetered on the legal limit for Snipes but eventually got under way with an Olympic 'T' course set. Alan Williams and Liz Crouch led until half distance when they were overtaken by French National Champions Jean-Jacques Frebault and Gille Boisaubert. Williams then successfully fought off Richard Lambert and Nick Lett on the final beat to claim a deserved second.

On Sunday the wind slowed the fleet to a crawl and Olympic 'W' courses were set. Frebault won the next two races and Anglo-French team Brian Gregory and Benjmin Romain followed in second both times. Juniors Phil Marshall and Duncan Read took third in the second race, as did Maxim Romain in the third.

By the final race the tide strengthened as the wind abated further. Frebault posted a perfect string of four bullets. The only other finisher was Jerome Thomas. Unluckiest of all was Chris Surridge and Peter Wolstenholme who led on the final beat but just could not find the puff needed to cross the finish line.

The event was superbly marshalled by fleet captain Keith Harding with support from wife Susan and a well drilled Broadstairs SC team.
