The wind was strong enough all weekend to encourage easing the traveler in the puffs and northerly enough to be reasonably steady - for Irondequoit Bay, anyway. The Saturday sky was cloudy enough to scare away the power boaters. And Dirk and Peter Kneulman were fast enough to win the regatta. Actually, Fritz and Jane Gram were almost fast enough -- only a quarter point out of the lead as the last race started.
This was the 63rd sailing of the Briody Regatta. Thirteen boats took to the water at Newport Yacht Club in Rochester, NY, to match wits in six races supervised by Commodore Peter Allen. In addition to his volunteer helpers, Peter used "The Ollie", an automatic signal timer. We recommend this device to every club for perfect timing every time. The only problem was that, with the air hose disconnected for a demonstration at the skippers' meeting, the signals sounded like goose honks. A white goose on the lawn responded to each with eager honks of his own. The timer was removed before this relationship could be consummated.
The Retzhaupt Trophy was awarded to the Fritz Gram as the skipper with the best record in the three District V regattas. John Korkosz and Chris Hains were second and third, respectively.
