1999 Pan Am Games - US Trials

Day 3 - 3/26/99 - FINAL

Heeeeees Back!

Henry Filter and Lorie Stout solidified their lead on the tough fleet of Snipe sailors with a 2,3 on the final day of the six race, no drop series. They will represent the US in the Pan American Games in Canada this summer. The sailing events will be held at the Gimli Yacht Club in Manitoba, Canada.

The breeze was slightly stronger than the forecast 10 knots from the NE. The sailing was lumpy as in the last couple of days, but the shifts were a bit more regular and not as difficult to predict.

In the first race locals and regatta organizers Watt and Precilla Duffy had a great race with a fourth, preceeded by Andy Pimental/Steven Davidson winning the race, Filter/Stout in second and Jerry Thompson/Jeff Baker in third.

In the second race, Carr Moody/Rick Jarchow got just enough right on the end of the third beat to take advantage of a right shift to oust Alex Pline/Sherry Eldrige at the finish, who had lead all the way around the double triangle course, followed by Filter/Stout in third.

The Southern Yacht Club did a great job hosting and running the regatta. Hats off the the Duffy's and Jerry Blouin for organizing a great event and housing most of the competitors in local housing, not to mention showing those who haven't been to New Orleans (and those who have) the wildness of the French Quarter.

Day 2 - 3/26/99

Lots of breeze, lots of shifts, and lots of pressure ups and downs. The cold front came through yielding gusty 12-18 knots from the N-NW. The first race was off at 10:10 with the best breeze of the day. The reaches on the double triangle course were lots of fun with long sustained planes. Like yesterday the beats were very tough. Henry Filter/Lorie Stout mangaged to hold on to win the first race, with Jerry Thompson/Jeff Baker second and Andy Pimental third.

After a general recall and several postponements while the breeze settled down the second race got going. Despite the sunny day, the breeze was cold during races, but things warmed up after the start. Henry Filter/Lorie Stout were really fast off the wind moving from 10th at the weather mark to second after the first triangle. Nonetheless, George Szabo/Carol Newman Cronin Lead the race from start to finish.

Local Jerry Blouin/Courtney Haslett win the gold medal for acrobatics today with a straight scores of 10 from all judges when a death roll resulted in both of them swimming, while the boat recovered after the centerboard showed and kept on going. Rumor has it that Jerry Thompson called starboard on the uncrewed boat only to learn that the ghost skipper of the unmanned boat didn't read the new rules.

Day 1 - 3/25/99

The Snipe Pan Am Games Trials kicked off today at the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans with two races in a breeze that was, well, a little of everything. We saw some typical Lake Pontchartrain conditions. In the race packet there was a writeup by Johnny Lovell talking about the local conditions and his quote "There is not much I can tell you that will be helpful. To be honest, the lake is one of the most unpredictable places I have ever sailed" really rang true.

The forecast for the day was SW 10 going to north 15-20 with the approach of a cold front. When we arrived at the club, the breeze was already NW, so we figured great, the cold front is here and we'll have some big air/big lumps. Well, one out of two ain't bad. At the start of the first of two scheduled races, the breeze was at full hiking strength and picking the shifts was key (and difficult) on the first beat of the 5 leg W/L course. By the end of the second beat, all we had was lump. The breeze got very light and the left over chop was madning. On the last beat, there were some huge shifts and differences in pressure, so you really had to be in the right place at the right time, as those that went to the same side of the course sometimes made out and sometimes didn't. In the end, Henry Filter/Lorie Stout from Annapolis held on to win the race with Pedro Lorson/Mimi Berry of New York in second and Jim Bowers/Myrna Chan MacRae in third. It was a long race as the first boat made the 2 1/2 hour time limit with not too much to spare.

The breeze picked back up for the second race, and thankfully held throughout the race despite some pressure ups and downs to go along with shifts and lumps. George Szabo/Carol Newman Cronin, fresh from their domination of the Midwinter Circuit, showed their high gear that no one else has by solidly winning the race. Alex Pline/Sherry Eldridge hovered in the top 5, working up to and holding onto second about halfway through the W/L course. Filter/Stout were right there again finishing a very close third.

Filter/Stout finish the day with a 1,3 at the top of the scoresheet followed by Jibe Tech builder Andrew Pimental in second with a consistent 4,4 and Bowers/MacRae with a 3,7. Unfortunately an OCS in race 1 kept Pline/Eldridge down on the scoresheet.
