1998 Pacific Coast Championship Results

A mild Santa Ana came through the San Diego area where the Snipe Fleet 495 in coordination with Coronado Yacht Club held the 1998 version of the PCCs. Coronado YC put on a great event as difficult conditions prevailed for both days of racing. When mild Santa Ana winds come into the area, there is usually a battle between the predominate sea breeze, which is usually a westerly, and the Santa Ana conditions which can be anywhere from northerlies to easterlies. Coupled with the wind were the currents in South San Diego bay. Tactics and speed were the keys to this event and the top three boats showed there muster the first day and each had a first, a second and a third although Chris Snow showed that being on the course side at the start of race two does not pay big dividends.

This event was held in conjuction with Coronado YC's Fall Small Boat Regatta and the Snipes shared the course with Lightnings, Catamarans, Capri 14.2, Flying Dutchmans and Melges 24. All went smoothly although some mark roundings became crowded. Did you know that a Snipe can outpoint a Melges.
