A great finish to a great regatta. Saturday morning competitors were greeted to 12 knots when they reached the boat yard at 9:30 am. By the time the final gun went off (after a recall), a solid 15 was blowing. An Olympic course was given, and the group was off. Once again, the left paid, but a few made out on the right. 6 boats converged at the weather mark at the same time with the Manderson's rounding first followed by Pedro Lorson and Mimi Berry and George Szabo/Jeff Baker. With the wind picking up, everyone was planing on the reaches and the mark roundings were tight. By the second weather mark, Szabo/Baker rounded in first, Lorson/Berry 2nd and Argyle Campbell and Jerelyn Biehl rounded 3rd. The wind lightened up downwind, but big puffs would roll through with everyone jockeying for position. At the finish, Szabo/Baker crossed first, winning the regatta, with Lorson/Berry in 2nd. Craig/Mimi Beardsley worked their way up through the 22knot puffs to finish 3rd. Lenkeit/Wingard crossed 4th and Jimmie Lowe and Gavin McKinney hit a big right shift, pulling them up to cross in 5th.

After 2 days of racing, 34 competitors from 3 countries have completed 5 of the 6 scheduled races.
Thursday, wind was very light for both races with competitors feeling like they were back in Gull Lake. Thunderstorms threatened all day but never materialized. Just a few light showers and overcast skies, but warm weather. Sailors hit the golf course afterwards for a quick 9 rounds, and more than a few golf carts looked to be in the wrong hands.
Lightning & thunder rumbled through the city at 4am, but by the skies were clearing by the 10:30 start. Race 3 (first race of Friday) started in 15-18 with 20 knot gusts. A lunch break was held on shore, and the breeze slowly fell in velocity. By the 4th race, the wind had backed off to 10-12. The RC ran a 3rd race which ran from 8-10-12 knots varying between legs. The final beat of the last race of today left more than a few sailors talking to themselves as the left side has paid off the entire regatta until the final last 1/4 of the final beat where those on the right found themselves in the money.
One more race is scheduled for Saturday with predictions of good breeze.

If you're planning to come to the NA's, there is one good motel that we left off of the registration form. The motel is the Sunset Motel in Carlyle. The phnoe number is (618)594-2472. This is a mom and pop motel and is not too fancy, but it is extremely clean with ac and cable tv. It is the place where the CSA members stay, and it's approx 10 miles closer than the big name motels in Greenville. The rates are very reasonable and they're also a sponsor of the event. Please consider giving these people your business.
Also, if you want more info about Carlyle Sailing Association, check out the website at www.csa-sailing.org.

The lake is big 10 miles long, 3 miles across, no tide, no current. We can set a course so as to avoid any shore effect to the wind. We've sailed 100 mile races on Carlyle Lake.
CSA's site is in Hazlet State Park, so cabins and camping with hook-ups are in very close proximity. Motels are available in Carlyle IL, 5 miles or Greenville IL, 19 miles.
There are two hard and fast rules at CSA ... Camping on the grounds & PETS are PROHIBITED.
St. Louis, MO is the nearest metropolitan area 50 miles to the west. If you're flying in, you'll land at St. Louis International airport. A rental car would needed to get to the lake. It's a long & expensive taxi ride.
The racing side of the NA's is in place. Major events at CSA are almost common. We are still working on the social side of the program. A golf scramble on a nearby lighted course is in the works, along with other activities. Food service is not generally available at CSA but, all meals will be AVAILIBLE during the NA's.
