Final Results - October 23

The cold front rolled in with a vengance. Temps were in the low 50's at noon with very shifty winds at 18 mph, gusting to the mid 20's. The wind appeared to be building so in the spirit of the Masters tradition at 2:00pm the decision was made to call it a regatta. Every one is looking forward to the awards banquet and blue grass band this evening.

Note how many were sailing with a family member. If any conclusion were to be drawn from this it is that sailing appearto be something you can do for a long time together with your family. Neat isn't it ?

See you at the USA Masters next year, possibly in Indiana, and at the World Masters in Denmark in 2000.

Results for Days 1,2 - October 21/22

A record turnout of 49 Masters teams, including 12 Grand Masters, are enjoying old friendships and competitive sailing at the 1998 USA Masters Championship at the Atlanta Yacht Club in Atlanta, Georgia this week. Teams from Norway, Denmark, Argentina, Brasil and Canada have joined the USA teams. After 4 races over 2 days Birger Jansen& Liv Ulveie (11 pts) have a slight lead over the George and Greg Fisher team ( 12 pts), Jan and Jane Persson (14 pts) and Bibi Juetz/Felipe Vasconcellos.

Jansen leads the Apprentice Master Group with the Perssons in 2nd and Jerry Blouin and Watty Duffy (24 pts) in 3 rd. The team of Don Hackbarth and Priscilla Duffy and Rowena Carlson and CarolBrown are also in the running with 26 and 27 points respectively.

The Masters Division is headed by Jim Richter and George Szabo (20 pts) followed by Dick and Linda Tillman (25) pts and Fritz and Jane Graham (25). Jerry Thompson and Nancy Gilreath are also in the picture with 26 points.

The Grand Master Division is led by the Fishers, with Juetz in 2 nd and Ken and Bill Simons in 3 rd with 33 points.

As you can see the competition has been tough within and accross age groups. With a cold front moving into the area Wednesday night a fresh 10-15 mph breeze from the northwest is expected for tomorrow. Sailing conditions for the last race should be ideal for the final race.

Day One ( Tuesday) provided nearly ideal conditions on Lake Allatoona with winds from the northwest at 8-12 mph, although the winds became for variable as the day progressed. Birger won both races in his fleet with Gonzo Diaz and Bibi Juetz taking the other two races. It was typical lake sailing getting into phase, tacking on the headers and looking for the next puff. When it was all over, everyone agreed it does not get much better on Allatoona. That evening the competitors were treated to a lake cruise on 2 very large house boats ( 90 ft) and a southern dinner at the Allatoona Yacht Club (motor) down the lake from AYC. Every one enjoyed the Snipe Report, an independent investigation into the memories of Snipe sailors, answering questions posed on picture slides from old Snipe Bulletins. Brainard Cooper proved to be the one with the most recall left in his brain. Jerry Thompson could not even recognize himself in one picture !

Day Two (Wednesday) and the greal Alltaoona/Old Joe comes raging back. With the front approaching the winds were very vraiable and from all directions, many times sailing close hauled and then wing and wing on the same leg. Several times the fleet would consolidate from behind on downwind legs only to be favoring one side of the course. Many times frist became last and last became first. When the day was all over the group enjoyed a great lowe country boil of shrimp, sausage, corn and potatos and then some group games; animal house, chair volley ball and Name That Tune. The awards of a case of beer for first, second and third places was much fought for as the troups had consumed all of the bar beer available for the evening already.

Everyone is looking forward to a great day of sailing tomorrow and then a fine banquet with a Blue Grass band for entertainment afterward.

Stay tuned.
