1997 Snipe Southeasterns

Lake Lanier Sailing Club (LLSC) hosted the seventh Snipe Southeastern
championships.  Seventeen crews from Alabama, Georgia, New York and
South Carolina traveled to Lake Lanier to enjoy sailing and socializing.
 Included in this group were three former regatta champions.  Marc
Duvoisin and Nancy Gilreath sailed consistently throughout to win over
Charlie and Michele Bustamante.  

Saturday turned out to be a picture postcard day as the sun shone, the
breeze blew and the temperatures were in the mid 70's.  A 8-12 knot
Southwesterly breeze with oscillating shifts made for three competitive
races.  Racing was close for the three races as Hal Gilreath and Kathy
Dressler established themselves as the early leaders.

Sundays races were not as perfect as Saturday's.  The wind gods forgot
to wake up on a sunny Sunday morning.  The fleet set forth in the first
of two races in almost no wind.  Tommy and Jack Smith held off the
Bustamantes to win the shortened drifter.  

The last race had a little more wind and the Bustamantes won it going
away.  John Muhlhausen was able garner second with Don Hackbarth and
Becky Killough in third.  Marc and Nancy were able to finish fourth to
earn the regatta by one point over the Bustamantes.  

The Southeasterns is but a prelude to LLSC's fall event, The Battle of
Atlanta.   Mid-September is when avid Snipe sailors and fans will return
to enjoy the sailing and socializing on Lake Lanier.  We'll see y'all
then.
