1997 Michigan Open and State Championships

What a loss for those of you who missed the Michigan open and State
Championships!

The weather was beutiful. Hot, sunny, and a decent amount of wind made for
a very pleasurable weekend. What really made the regatta though, was the
competition! Everyone there was really good!

For the first time, two boats came from Cleveland, which proved to be our
undoing, as the Cleveland clan really gave us a run for our money.

Saturday night, the Island dinner went over well, with Rasta Mon Rich
Grant Spinnin Da Tunes Mon...The group was very relaxed, and reveling
continued into the night.

This year, we installed the Michigan Open Trophy, a 1/10 scale mahagony
Snipe, with 10 coats of varnish, on a mahagony stand, with a brass plate.
It is now on view (for the next year) in Cleveland, at JR Francis's house.
Those of you from Cleveland, go over to jr's house, I'm sure he'd love to
show it to you! Really though, JR and Liz Potters' skill was evident as
they posted a 2nd and 3 bulletts to take the regatta. Hopefully, next year
the competition will accellerate, so come and show your stuff!

Winner of the Michigan State Championship were perennial favorites Fred
and Jan Rozelle of Crescent Sailing Club in Grosse Pointe. The only other
bullett was theirs!

In general, we had a great time, and sailed our butts off. That's the way
it should be. Pictures of the Open trophy will be posted in the Snipe Bulletin, watch
for them!
