The 1996 South American Championship was organized by the Yacht Club Uruguayo, in the same area where the last Western Hemisphere Championship was raced.
Thirty three crews from Argentina, Brasil, Chile and Uruguay competed for the most important trophy in the area.
After five races, Ricardo Fabini and Ignacio Saralegui from Uruguay won for the second time the South American Championship.
The first day's weather wasn't good enough for sailing as there were gusts of up to 23 knots and very high seas. Even as Nicolas Gonzales/Diego Masironi showed that it was possible to sail a snipe, the Race Commitee understood that it was too risky to go out in such an unstable weather condition, and we all stayed ashore waiting for the second day.
For the second day things went better. Sailing south easterly winds of about 15 knots, Pereira/Pereira from Argentina won the first race folowed by Ricardo Fabini/Ignacio Saralegui and the defending champions Paradera/Fernandez from Brasil.
The second race followed, and the first positions switched. Ricardo Fabini/Ignacio Saralegui won followed by Pereyra/Pereyra and Roberto Fabini/Juan Esterovich.
The weather didn't change for the third day. Three races were held this day, as the Race Commitee took the chance that the weather would worsen for the next day.
The third race was won again by Ricardo Fabini/Ignacio Saralegui, followed by Montes/Fernandez and Despontin/Romero from Argentina.
The defending champions Paradera/Fernandez won the fourth race followed by Ricardo Fabini/Ignacio Saralegui and Carluccio/Garra (Jr).
We will never forget the fifth race! After two exhausting ones, it was hard to believe there was another one. But all who complained about it, ended up acknowledging the excelent criteria showed by the Race Commitee as this fifth race was in fact the last race, due to the 30 knot wind that blowed on the following and last day.
The fifth race was won again by Paradera/Fernandez followed by Ricardo Fabini/Ignacio Saralegui and Peralta/Baquedano from Argentina.
The invited international jurys Jorge Carrer and Fernando Krahe fortunately didn't have much work to do, as there were only a few protests. They taught us a lot about the new SCIRA and IYRU rules and participated us of their extremly rich experience.
The final results are stated hereafter.
