Pensacola 96
Site of the Snipe National Championships

The Pensacola Yacht Club and District 4 are hosts for this year's National Championship Regattas scheduled for July 12th through July 19th. Located on beautiful green waters of Pensacola Bay, The PYC is a magnificent southern style mansion surrounded by hundred year old live oaks dripping with Spanish moss. The club offers a restaurant, patio snack bar, lounge, tennis court, plenty of camping space for tents and motor homes and an olympic size pool. Located within a 20 minute drive from the club is Pensacola's 150 mile Gulf Island National Seashore. These world famous beaches were recently judged among the most beautiful in the United States. Other local attractions include the National Museum of Naval Aviation, theaters, museums and a quaint downtown shopping area.

Pensacola Bay is a large protected area that will comfortably permit separate race courses for both the Heinzerling and Wells Series. Both courses will be located approximately 1.5 miles from the club. Water depth in the sailing area ranges from 20-38 feet with an average water temperature in July of 80 degrees. No wetsuits this year, gang. Current will not be a factor as the tide averages 6-18 inches above MLW. How about a steady 10-15 knots wind daily from the SE starting at 1 pm?

Pensacola was settled by the French in the 1500's and has been completely restored to its original splendor. We have secured a small block of rooms in a small motel in the Palafox Historic District three miles from the PYC and within walking distance to the Seville Quarter, Pensacola's center of night life and Trader Jon's. For those of you who attended the 1979 Nationals in Pensacola, Trader Jon's is still going strong and has a new supply of 1996 rookies.

In addition to some of the most enjoyable sailing conditions you will experience this year, we have scheduled a full variety of social events to please the most discriminating tastes. We'll begin with a District 4 Welcome Party, followed by a poolside margarita party with our style of District Olympics, croquet on the yacht club lawn, a casino night where the big winners can bid for some really neat stuff during a lively auction, bar hopping at the Seville Quarters, and ending with the Awards Banquet at PYC. Daily kegs of beer and other cool refreshments will be located in the boat storage area after the races.

And for the kids... we are planning daily sailing camp taught by PYC's US Sailing certified Level 1 instructors in sunfish and childcare service for the little ones during race hours. Even if the entire family is not into sailing, there is much to do in Pensacola. We even arrange to have the Blue Angels provide an air show at the beach that week. So come on down and we'll show ya what some good southern hospitality is all about, you hear.

District 4 Governor
Regatta Chairman
