1995 Wolverine Regatta
Barton Pond
Ann Arbor, MI
June 17-18, 1995
The Wolverine Regatta ("Barton Ocean Open") came off as a great success at
Barton Pond, Ann Arbor, Michigan, the weekend of June 17 and 18. After the
annual Wolverine Regatta Bash at the Johns', thirty teams made their way to
the starting line Saturday with winds 0-10 kts and temperatures hovering
around 90 degrees. Conditions were typical for Barton Pond with lots of
holes, puffs, and shifts that can occasionally cause major shuffling of the
fleet. Id Crook did his usual great job running the races.
The first race saw Terry Timm and Greg Fisher, Jno Disch and Karen Lorenz,
and Bev and Mark Spicknall get a jump on the fleet and battle around the
course to finish 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The next race it was Rick and
Kate Wood, Paul Revere and Dana Boocock, and Kirk Donaldson and Kate
Heywood finishing in that order, with the Spicknall's and Timm/Fisher not
far back.
After a great lunch and a bit of waiting for the wind to return, two more
races were completed with the Woods, Donaldson/Heywood, and Revere/Boocock
out front in the first, and Donaldson/Heywood and the Woods switching
places in the second with Disch/Lorenz back up into third.
Saturday night's party at Harry and Jan Hawkins' was a splash as ususal, as
many crews took advantage of the pool and the Blender to cool their bodies
and their minds. The steaks and ice cream sundays tasted great, too.
Sunday morning dawned with more light winds and hot temperatures. Terry
Timm, now with his daughter Aubrey crewing and calling the tactics, once
again got off to a fast start, winning the first race of the day. They
were followed by Donaldson/Heywood and the Woods, setting up the last race
battle for the regatta between these two great teams. Just before the
start of the last race, the wind shifted 60 degrees to the left. The Woods
were caught near the wrong end of the line and rounded the first mark in
the mid-twenties. At this point Disch/Lorenz had taken the lead with
Donaldson/Heywood holding second and looking good for the regatta win. But
wait! The Woods proceeded to charge up through the fleet with a great
display of light air sailing. They made it back to finish fourth, losing
the regatta by only 3/4 of a point to Donaldson and Heywood after the
through-out. The results, posted below, also reflected tight racing
throughout the fleet.
In addition to the great racing and parties, Greg Fisher and North Sails
donated a new jib to be raffled off in support of the 1997 World
Championship to be held in San Diego, USA. The jib was won by Sam Stone of
Gull Lake, Michigan. Congratulations, Sam! And a big "Thank You" to Greg
Fisher, North Sails, and to all who contributed to support the 1997 Worlds.
To those who came from out of town, a sincere "thank you" from our fleet
for coming. Be sure to come back next year, and bring your friends! For
those who maybe have not yet made the pilgrimage to Barton Ocean, be sure
to do it at least once before you die. You'll be glad you did.
