1995 Sea Cliff Yacht Club Call of Fall Regatta
Sea Cliff, New York
September 23-24, 1995
Opting for more races on shorter courses, the Sea Cliff Yacht Club held its
annual Call of Fall event with a small fleet of eight. Saturday's racing
saw a steady 15-20 out of the north with decent chop, while Sunday brought
a shifty 10-15 east breeze with a northerly trying to fill.
Some of the six races on Saturday seemed like a match race between Lorson
and Coyle, who finished 1-2 in all six. The remaining six boats sailed in
a tight pack, with the points spread through the New York crowd. Five of
the six races were windward-lewards, making the start all-important. The
need to get off fast coupled with a short line lead to two general recalls
and one "false alarm" when half the fleet turned back (including Lorson,
who tore back into the race from more than half a leg behind to win).
Only six boats returned to the short and tight starting line of Sunday's
racing. With the ace team of Pedro Lorson and Mimi Berry (nee Lorson --
congrats Mimi) occupied by team racing at the American Yacht Club on Sunday,
the bullets became more available and spead among Schniper, Lawson, and
Coyle. Coyle and D'Antonio took the regatta with a 2-3-1-1, while the
Lawson placed 3-1-3-4 to finish second. Pedro and Mimi placed third in
absentia.
Capsizing was the order of the weekend, with Mike "Flip" Benchimol playing
fair and offering both regular crew Lisa Kalen and his backup Terry a view
of the bottom of his snipe. The Lawsons and Eric Gabrielson (with college
buddy and first time crew Mike McCoy) also tested the waters. The small
fleet lead to a small party, but the big screen TV of the Sea Cliff Regatta
Room was a huge hit.

Thanks to "Flip" Benchimol and the Lawsons for planning and running a great
regatta, and to the Sea Cliff Soling fleet for their great job as race
committee.
