Scandinavian Championships
July 26-28, 1995
Marstrand, Sweden

The Scandinavian Championships (or Nordics as we prefer) was held in
Marstrand, just north of Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast at July
26-28 by GKSS. The weather was sunny and warm with winds between 3 and
15 knots. 40 boats from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland attended.

Day 1 had a slowly veering south-easterly wind and a north-going
current. The left side of the course paid off in the first race, due
to more wind and less current. The second race was maybe a bit more
subtle with a marked veer, but the left was still the place to
be. Swedes Fredrik Segerstrom/Richard Obelpichler opened strongly with
two firsts (Fredrik was 4th at the Worlds, sailing with Carl Terneus).

Day 2 had a light south-easterly breeze that during the day veered,
weakened, veered some more, came back in strength and backed, died,
came back again and backed to the initial direction and
strength. Whew! This time it was Kristoffer Spone and Janette
Krefting's time to shine. The fast Norwegians (2nd at the Europeans
'94 and 9th at the Worlds in Italy this year) took two bullets in the
difficult conditions. Race no 3, however, was later cancelled after
some sailors filed an appeal for redress, due to the shifting winds
turning the first and second beat into two beam reaches.

The final day had conditions similar to the first day. Kristoffer and
Janette used their excellent speed two take two more bullets and the
Championship was theirs. Fredrik and Richard was a close second and
third was the rather unconsistent 2nd-year crew Christopher Scheie/Gro
Christiansen from Norway.

Denmark and Finland was a bit off the pace with Sweden and Norway
filling the top ten places. On their way to the European Youth Snipe
Championships, Italian crew Enrico Solerio/Testi Alessio popped in and
managed an 12th place, being the only non-Scandinavian contestants.
