1994 Halloween Regatta
Held on Lake Alatoona and hosted by the Atlanta Yacht Club

This year's Halloween regatta at AYC, just northeast of Atlanta, was
fortunate to have great breeze (5-15 knots) and relatively warm weather and
no SNOW. The breeze was mostly easterly with the usual lake type shifts
making the beats challenging but still fair. The winner of the regatta came
down to the last race (remember that the fleet was split into 4 groups which
raced each other onc, resulting in duplicate scores for each race) with Steve
Burke inching out Hal Gilreath in the showdown race where they got to race
directly against each other. In general Lake Lanier Sailing Club, on the
other side of Atlanta, was the power house at this regatta taking the first
5 places in the Spooks fleet. There were four international teams, one each
>from Brazil, Bermuda, Norway and Canada. There were also may newcomers that
travelled fair distances to attend. The water was really down this year due
to construction on the dam, resulting in the island popping up in the middle
of the windward leg. There were a few groundings by people pressing their
luck, but one could at least see it this year instead of just the two marker
bouys (and about 1 foot of water) as was the case last year. It did help
keep the fleet consolidated as most people figured out that left usually
payed on the beats.

The Best Group Costume Prize went to Id Crook and Bent Polson who, upon
returning from their jaunting around Japan at this year's World Snipe
Festival, dressed up as two sumo wrestlers. They came out in robes and
continually undressed to short robes and then stopped at loin clothes
(thankfully!!!) and proceeded to bump uglies for the crowd, much to their
delight. They even researched the library for the sayings on their
headbands (I'll leave that to your imaginations).
