Regatta News: SCIRA US Announces Keane, Inc. as the 2003 US Snipe National Championships Title Sponsor
March 20, 2003:
Keane, Inc. has made a generous donation to the event, called the "Keane 2003 US Snipe National Championships". We are grateful for their contribution. It will allow us to have a top notch event while keeping the entry fee at a level comparable with past events. "Serious sailing and serious fun" are definitely part the agenda for this nationals - thanks to Keane.
Keane, Inc. headquartered in Boston, partners with Global 2000 companies and government agencies to plan, build, and manage application software to enable their business strategies. We look forward to working with Keane throughout this particularly important national championship.
The Notice of Race and Entry Forms (Standard/Women's and Juniors') are
finalized. We have also provided suggestions on how to get to Marion in the "Getting There" section. For the non-sailing spouse or if we have a racing delay, we have compiled
a list of local attractions, including activities ranging from a couple hours to day trips. If you plan on staying in a local hotel/motel,
we urge you to make housing reservations early, because the summer is the busiest season on Cape Cod.
SCIRA US Announces Nationals Location
January 24, 2003:
The 2003 Snipe Nationals will be held in Marion, Massachusetts between Saturday July 12 and Friday July 18.
Marion is a small town located in southeastern Massachusetts. It is one of a number of communities that
are connected by water, all of which are located in Buzzards Bay. Marion is a town which captures the
essence and heart of New England. The streets in the village section of Marion are lined with houses
that are reminiscent of a time long since past. The New England charm of tree lined streets and white
picket fences is evident throughout the village. There is still a General Store in the center of the
village and the Post Office is directly across the street. Marion is also home to Tabor Academy,
a well-known preparatory school (whose alumni include some D1 Snipers!). The picture perfect campus spreads out across the center of the town.
Marion's harbor is listed on the charts as Sippican Harbor. It is one of the prettiest harbors in Buzzards Bay.
In the summer the harbor is filled with boats of every size. Buzzards Bay is a is a boater's paradise.
It is known for its southwest winds that kick up a blow almost every afternoon.
Any fog that may appear in the morning usually burns off to a haze, or clears in the afternoon.
For more about this quintessential New England Summer town, see the town web site.
The regatta will be hosted by the Beverly Yacht Club (panoramic picture) which has a history of conducting major dinghy and big boat events such as the 505 Worlds,
the Buzzards Bay Regatta, the Marion to Bermuda Race and the International Canoe worlds and is well equipped to run an event of the caliber of the Snipe Nationals. Because the club has limited drysail
facilities, we will be using the town of Marion beach as the launching area.
It has a wide beach and large grassy area for
boat storage. When the Buzzards Bay Regatta is held in Marion, this facility is used to launch more than 200 Lasers and
other dinghy classes. This is a great drysail area and is about 2 blocks from the BYC. Because it is a beach launch, please plan ahead to
beg, borrow or buy and Seitech launching dolly or other suitable beach friendly device.
Planning for the 2003 Nationals is well underway! Regatta Chair Barb Evans and Beverly Yacht Club
Liason, Graham Quinn have assembled a great team of District 1 sailors and BYC club members to run the regatta. The first piece of
information that we want to make available is about housing. Housing will be provided to some competitors (not all)
on a first come, first serve basis. The contact information for local homestays will be posted on the Notice of Race around mid-February.
We have collected a listing (pdf list) of local hotels and motels with a 15 minute drive. We urge you to make reservations early, because the summer is the busiest season on Cape Cod.
