TWELFTH ANNUAL DEAD OF WINTER NOTICE OF RACE Jan 1-3 RULES: This regatta will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing 1997-2000, the SCIRA Rules for Sanctioned Regattas, the Snipe Class Rules and the Sailing Instructions. ELIGIBILITY: Skippers must be a member of SCIRA and an owner (or co-owner) of a registered Snipe. USF students may sail USF owned boats in this regatta if: they are members of the USF sailing team, and are 1998 paid members of SCIRA. FEES: $45 entry fee per boat ($55 for non-members of US Sailing), which includes: Regatta participation, coffee and pastries at the Sailing Center Saturday and Sunday mornings, New Year's Day party at Matt & Laura Bryant's home, and up to two entries in the single-handed regatta, Crewless in St. Pete on Friday 1-1-99. Saturday evening buffet at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club for both skipper and crew is also included. Make checks payable to Snipe Fleet 801. ADDITIONAL CHARGES: There will be a cash bar Saturday evening at the yacht club, and a cookout at the Sailing Center after racing on Sunday. New Years Eve downtown St. Petersburg party badges can be obtained from the Chamber of Commerce. Guest privileges at SPYC will be available to regatta participants through your yacht club reciprocal privileges or by credit card confirmation; please come to the front desk at SPYC. SAILING AREA: Located on the western side of Tampa Bay directly off the St. Petersburg Pier; hoists and floating ramps are available at the St. Petersburg Sailing Center, at the foot of First Ave. South. PRIZES: The Jim Brown Memorial Trophy is awarded to the top finisher, with keeper trophies awarded to both skipper and crew of the top three finishing yachts. Additional awards at the event chairman's discretion. WEATHER: Be sure to bring plenty of warm clothing and foul weather gear, it can be unexpectedly chilly despite the location and time of year. HOUSING: There are many hotels nearby. Also there are Snipe sailors and SPYC members that are offering homestays, call for the connection. Baby sitters will be available if prior arrangements are made. SNIPE STORAGE: Storage for your Snipe can be arranged after the regatta for a nominal fee until the Midwinters. Also you can bring your boat down early to avoid being snowed in. SCHEDULE: Thursday, December 31 Practice sailing all day Downtown New Year's Eve Festival 1000 Fireworks Party aboard Welch's boat "Sails" SPYC docks Friday, January 1 1200 "Crewless in St. Pete" competitors meeting Harbor start follows immediately New Years Day Party-trophy presentation- Matt & Laura Bryant's house immediately after racing Maps will be available Saturday, January 2 0700 Registration, coffee etc, Sailing Center 0930 "Dead of Winter" competitors meeting Harbor start follows immediately 1830 Buffet at SPYC Sunday, January 3 0800 Coffee etc, Sailing Center 0930 First warning signal of day 1500 No warning signals after 1500 Immediately following completion of the last race, there will be a dockside cookout at the Sailing Center and awards presentation.
